![]() In particular, Reeve was one of the first authors to contribute to the new genre of Historical Gothic, at the time referred to simply as ‘Romance’ or ‘Historical Romance’. Living in Ipswich, however, a bastion of ‘old Whig’ politics, helped to shape the political ideology that she promoted, albeit subtly, throughout her literary career and which made a substantial impact on the burgeoning Gothic genre. Far from the capital she did not have the opportunity to move in great literary circles or participate in the Blue Stockings Society with her fellow intellectuals. ![]() She did however leave several publications: a book of original poetry, a translation of John Barclay’s political romance Argenis (1621), seven novels and two treatise one on the history of the novel and the other on educational reform. ![]() Clara Reeve was born in Ipswich in 1729 and led a retired life, never married and died in 1807, leaving very little biographical material. ![]()
